People have been led to believe that all otherkin are fucking children living in fantasy worlds who eat gems and identify with toilets and Doritos.

Like are you really believing this? These obvious troll blogs? I’m assuming you’re all smart enough…

Otherkin are people who identify as non-human.

Have some people who identify as otherkin had hard lives/childhoods/whatever? Sure, we’re human so our experiences span the range of human experience. Do those hard experiences determine being otherkin? Well, no. Some people who have hard experiences are otherkin and many are not. Can very traumatic experiences lead to fundamental changes in the brain “creating” a non-human identity? You bet. Do they necessarily? No.

Is identity a coping mechanism? No. Can it be used as such? Yes, but in that case please do not call yourself otherkin as that is not what the identity is about and never has been.

Can you be mentally ill and otherkin? Yes. Are you otherkin because you are mentally ill? Almost certainly not (with few exceptions such as DID, etc.).

Now say it with me, folks:

Identifying as otherkin is not about mental illness and never has been.

Identifying as otherkin is not about a coping mechanism and never has been.

Identifying as otherkin is about one’s integral and personal identity and always has been.

Thank you for actually explaining this to me instead of just telling me that I’m wrong.

I really needed this information because I was sincerely misled and confused so thank you for correcting me and being so kind about it.
