7 Subtle Signs Your Trauma Response is to ‘Fawn’

rapeculturerealities:

In a nutshell, “fawning” is the use of people-pleasing to diffuse conflict, feel more secure in relationships, and earn the approval of others.

It’s a maladaptive way of creating safety in our connections with others by essentially mirroring the imagined expectations and desires of other people.

Often times, it stems from traumatic experiences early on in life, as I described in last month’s article.

It resonated with so many you, and since then, I’ve gotten a lot of questions on how to recognize this type of response in ourselves, particularly in our day-to-day interactions.

I can only speak from personal experience, but there are a number of commonalities among “fawn” types that I think are worth noting.

I’m going to share seven struggles that a lot of us seem to experience as people-pleasers. If it sounds familiar, you, my friend, probably know a thing or two about fawning.

Bystander Effect Debunked - In 91% Of Real World Cases Someone Helps

emiliers:

hungwy:

shituationist:

You know, sometimes we really do live in a society

“The scholars examined video recordings of 219 arguments and assaults in inner cities of Amsterdam (Netherlands), Lancaster (UK) and Cape Town (South Africa).”

“Video surveillance of actual crimes instead shows that in 91 percent of cases someone helped victims of aggression and violence, and the more people who see it, the more likely more than one person helps. It may be that instead of feeling embarrassment about being inadequate with more witnesses around, as psychologists previously speculated, people are emboldened by having others nearby.”

“Some people are just not going to help, of course, that is the diversity of people, but that is why claiming the bystander effect applied to broad populations was a mistake. There was no difference in the rates of intervention between the three cities, even though inner city Cape Town is less safe than Amsterdam. The high levels of intervention across different national and urban contexts suggests that intervention is the norm in real-life inner-city public conflicts.”

It’s important to remember that the Bystander Effect was never an actual theory proposed by academics or social scientists. It was coined by a newspaper journalist and gained traction from that. And the journalist even got the details of the case in question (the murder of Kitty Genovese) completely wrong, like in an ye olde click-bait-y way.

So the “Bystander Effect” literally never had any scientific or academic backing when it first came out, and it’s since been debunked numerous times, but people jumped on it because it was compelling. Just goes to show how powerful media representation can be in affecting public consciousness.

Cyberpunk 2077’s E3 demo has weak gunplay and unimaginative stereotypes

cw racism
If you weren’t convinced not to buy CyberPunk 2077 because of the transphobia and you think Keanu Reeves is your god for whatever god damn reason, then please read this 1

He told me that most of the city were mixed race, but the backstory for this particular area concerned most people being immigrants from Haiti. By itself, that would be fine. But near the end of the demo, we meet a white man in a suit and tie who gives us the information we need. He also tells us the Voodoo Boys are going to turn on us the moment we’ve done their dirty work – and is immediately proved right.

The violent black thugs betrayed us, as the corporate white man said they would. If CD Projeckt are trying to subvert expectations – if the punchline is, but sometimes the thugs are really thugs – then it’s not one that lands.

Please don’t support this game. CD Projeckt don’t deserve any of your money and

Final Fantasy VII Remake E3 2019 trailer, stage demo; special editions announced - Gematsu

Square Enix debuted a four-minute trailer and gameplay demo of Final Fantasy VII Remake during its E3 2019 press conference.

Remaking Final Fantasy VII has allowed us to dive much deeper into the world and its characters than ever before,” Final Fantasy VII Remake producer Yoshinori Kitase said on stage. “The game design was optimized for this title as well, and we anticipate two blu-ray discs worth of gameplay content. The first game in this project expands on the story of Midgar, and is such an elaborate retelling that it has become a solid standalone game in its own right.”

Square Enix product marketing senior manager Neal Pabon explained the battle system:

Final Fantasy VII Remake features a hybrid gameplay system that merges real-time action with strategic command-based combat. For starters, each press of the Square button is a swing of Cloud’s Buster Sword. Cloud attacks, dodges, and blocks all in real-time. His standard attacks do some damage, but they barely scratch the surface of Cloud’s true potential.

Succeeding on the battlefield requires more than just hacking and slashing. Cloud needs to be tactical. He needs ATB. Two ATB bars are displayed in the lower right. These fill up slowly over time, but fill much faster as Cloud lands standard attacks. Once an ATB bar is full, you can enter Tactical Mode, where time slows to a crawl and you have the opportunity to choose actions from the command menu. Once in Tactical Mode, you can choose to perform various abilities, such as Cloud’s Braver attack. Using an item in battle will deplete an ATB charge, and if Cloud has the right Materia equipped and enough MP, he can use ATB charges to cast spells.

[As for Barrett,] with the use of his iconic gun arm, Barrett is able to target enemies at a distance. Barrett’s standard attacks generate ATB charges similar to Cloud, but his abilities are entirely different. Switching between characters in combat is done with a single button press, which makes rotating through characters in combat a snap. Characters will continue to fight even when you’re not controlling them directly, but it’s up to you to control when and how ATB charges are used. You can maximize your effectiveness by switching between characters or issuing commands to characters with full ATB bars. Every enemy has a focus gauge that fills up as you deal damage. When the gauge is full, the enemy becomes staggered and you’ll deal bonus damage.

Tactical Mode evokes the command selections from the original Final Fantasy VII, and allows players to enjoy battle while taking the time to think strategically. For players who prefer fast-paced actions, abilities and spells can be bound to shortcuts for immediate execution. Shortcuts make combat extremely dynamic, but the choice of using them is entirely up to you.

Here are the latest details on the game, including information about the Deluxe, Digital Deluxe, and 1st Class Editions, via Square Enix:

8-year-old Mexican Girl Wins Nuclear Sciences Prize For Her Invention

profeminist:

“At just 8 years old, Xóchitl has designed and constructed a solar-powered device to heat water, using only recycled materials, Cultura Colectiva reports.

For many, this device may seem totally unnecessary.  But, in Xóchitl’s community, where resources are scarce, “people don’t have the money to buy heaters, so they chop down trees to get firewood [to heat the water],” says Xóchitl.

Her device not only functions to provide hot water to low-income families in her community, it also saves trees!

Xóchitl’s family helped her set the device up on their roof and have been using it to heat water to bathe.  Xóchitl says she always bathes quickly though, “so [the hot water] will last for my little brother.”

We Snuck into Seattle's Super Secret White Nationalist Convention

theexistentialanarchist:

berqamot:

koobaxion:

gendernihilistanarchocommunist:

White nationalists generally don’t want to look like characters out of American History X anymore. Fashion choices at the convention ranged from Ruby Ridge to Mad Men, but most of the people there looked like you might run into them on Capitol Hill or in the U-District. That said, there is a type. According to my observations, the standard Seattle Nazi is a white male under 30 who either works in the tech industry or is going to school to work in the tech industry. “You’re also a coder? Do you mind if I send you something I’ve been working on?” I heard that more than once.

“That movie Hidden Figures was bullshit,” a guy dressed like John Goodman in The Big Lebowski said out of nowhere. “We never went to the moon, Stanley Kubrick faked all of it.” Water almost squirted out of my nose and it was the closest I came all night to breaking character.

“ Much bleaker is Dr. Johnson’s Seattle-suitable, “secret agent” racism plan. Basically, white nationalists meet in secret at conventions like Northwest Forum while paying “lip service to diversity” at their day jobs. They move into positions of power where they can hire other racists and keep non-whites from getting into the company. Two years ago, this method would have seemed like a total joke, but these guys really do mostly work in tech, and they were doing a lot of networking. When talking about the people he has counseled on the “secret agent” method, Dr. Johnson has written that they include “college professors, writers, artists, designers, publishers, creative people working in the film industry, businessmen, and professionals, some of them quite prominent in their fields.” ”

I wonder when liberals are going to stop pretending racists are just a bunch of rural rednecks and start taking a serious approach in combating racism. And conservatives are outraged whenever they perceive an “Inquisition” like “you can’t hold conservative views anymore in your job:(” gee I wonder why my guy.

Lol I keep trynna tell people seattle is racist but they don’t hear me tho
